Part 4 of 4

AI-Driven Development Series

Where Do We Go
From Here?

Strategic direction for an uncertain future

We've covered
a lot of ground.

Part 1

Why behavior matters
more than code.

Part 2

How to rebuild systems.

Part 3

How to think with AI.

Now...

🧭

Where do we go
from here?

But first...

Let me be honest with you.

I could be wrong.

About all of this.

This might not be
the future.

AI might plateau.

The hype might fade.

Everything I've said
might end up as a footnote.

I acknowledge that.

But if it is...

If this IS the direction...

Being late is expensive.

Let me ask you
a question.

🔥

Was fire invented?

And then cooking
evolved from it?

Or...

🍲

Was cooking needed?

So fire was invented
to serve it?

Option A

Technology push.

We build it. Then we find uses.

Option B

Demand pull.

The need exists. The tool fills it.

The answer?

Both.

It's always both.

🔥

Fire was discovered.

And the need for warmth,
protection, and nutrition
shaped how we used it.

The interaction
created civilization.

Same with AI.

AI arrives from
research labs.

And our accumulated
complexity creates the pull.

Why does this matter?

Because it means this is
more durable than a fad.

And more inevitable
than an option.

The bet.

What if we're wrong?

We invest in this approach.

And it doesn't pan out.

What do we lose?

Worst case

Better tests.

Better specs.

Better discipline.

Still a win.

What if we're right?

We change everything.

10x

development velocity

Technical debt becomes
irrelevant.

Rebuild faster
than patch.

New competitive dynamics.

This is asymmetric.

Bounded downside.

Unbounded upside.

That's the shape
of the bet.

Strategy.

The moat question.

If everyone can
generate code...

What's the competitive
advantage?

Here's the thing.

Code was never
the moat.

Companies that thought code
was their moat were
always wrong.

The real moat?

Position.

Data.

Relationships.

Network effects.

Brand.

Things that
can't be generated.

Code just expresses
those things.

And expression can be
fast or slow.

Internal AI vs
External AI.

External AI

Products for customers.

Chatbots. Recommendations.

Internal AI

How we build.

How we think. How we work.

Most companies
focus on external.

And ignore internal.

Internal AI compounds.

External AI competes.

Segmenting.

Not everything should
be regenerated.

Some systems should
become engines.

Generic.
Config-driven.
Reusable.

The skill is knowing
which is which.

Remember the
paradigm shifts?

Waterfall.

Object-Oriented.

Agile.

Cloud.

DevOps.

They all seemed risky.

At the time.

Then they became
invisible.

Just how things are done.

We don't have to believe
this is the destination.

Just that it's a
better direction.

Than the one we're on.

I've been chasing that spark
for forty years.

That feeling from the 80s.

Type something.

Magic happens.

AI is bringing it back.

Not replacing the magic.

Amplifying it.

We don't have to believe
this is the destination.

➡️

Just that it's a better
direction.

Thank you.
